11/14/2023 0 Comments Playon tvIn my opinion, the term "stream capture", is not exactly correct. Either approach is enough to lose me as a customer. Not for this reason, but I am with many here who are unwilling to pay them for what is ostensibly identical software and functionality after I paid for a lifetime sub way back in 2010.īased on how badly they handled this transition to a cloud subscription model, they either meant to alienate those of us who helped them get off the ground because we cost them too much in the modern era, or it was gross incompetence. It is, however, extremely unlikely that anyone will break down your door because you recorded a bunch of episodes and never distributed them.įull disclosure - I don't use PlayOn anymore. Simple fact of the matter is, whether you use PlayOn or one of the other services that offers similar functionality, you're on legally shaky ground. PlayOn's feelings about being on legally safe ground does not equal a tested legal precedent and probably wouldn't stand up in court - at least in the US. PlayOn likes to pretend they're on legally safe ground here because of the "long-established" exception for personal-use time-shifting (based on VCR/DVR recording of live air broadcasts), but the truth is, most of the Terms of Service for everything explicitly prohibits what PlayOn and similar services do. I'm interested in the user experience regarding this. Has anybody ever had any problems with any streaming service because of this? I'm wondering what PlayOn's official position is on this. That's exactly what PlayOn does: stream capture. You may not either directly or through the use of any device, software, internet site, web-based service, or other means stream capture the Content unless expressly permitted by the terms of your subscription or otherwise by Hulu in writing. The only thing that is making me hesitate about using PlayOn are the terms of use of streaming services.Ī. I really like the idea of having one single place to see them all. For example, recently with Schitt's Creek that went from Netflix to Hulu. Shows/movies get moved around services all the time due to licensing rights. Indeed, we always wonder which apps to open every time we want to watch particular shows. I am really interested in using it because I think it solves a problem in my family. It's actually pretty clever (and legal) the way it does it. With this post, I don't mean to start FUD, not my intention at all, I just have a genuine question.įirst, let me say that I am not questioning the legality of PlayOn, not at all, it's perfectly fine. My apologies if there is already a discussion about this, I simply didn't find it. I tried to search about this topic and didn't see anything about it in the search results so I'm creating this post now.
